Greenleaf Elementary School

Message from the Principal - Sonya Simpson

As we begin a new school year at Greenleaf Elementary, I am excited to introduce and celebrate the outstanding leaders who will serve our students, staff, and families.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Vaughan to the Greenleaf family and congratulating Apryl Ott as she begins her new role as our school counselor. We are also excited to welcome back Assistant Principal Kelly Smoot and STEM Instructional Coach Jennifer Coker, whose leadership and dedication continue to make a positive impact on our campus.

Together, this team is committed to supporting our students, empowering our teachers, and ensuring every Wildcat has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. We look forward to a fantastic school year!

Assistant Principal - Kelly Smoot

Kelly Smoot is excited to begin her second year as Assistant Principal at Greenleaf Elementary. A proud graduate of Splendora High School, she is honored to serve the district where her educational journey began. She launched her teaching career at Greenleaf Elementary and has since gained experience as a teacher, instructional coach, curriculum writer, and campus leader.

Ms. Smoot is passionate about supporting student success, empowering teachers, and fostering a positive, collaborative school culture. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time outdoors, kayaking, traveling, and making memories with family. She is also a proud dog mom to two Yorkies and loves cheering on her nieces, who attend Piney Woods Elementary and Splendora Junior High.

Instructional Coach - Jennifer Coker

Jennifer Coker earned her Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Sam Houston State University in December 2013. She has taught kindergarten, second grade, and third grade. In August 2023, she began a new chapter as the STEM Instructional Coach and is excited to support innovation and growth at GLE.

Mrs. Coker is married and a proud mom of three—Shelby and Jerry, who are discovering their own paths, and Elyjah, who is currently at GLE.

Instructional Coach - Maria Vaughan

Dr. Maria Vaughan is excited to serve the Greenleaf Elementary community as an instructional leader. She recently relocated to Texas from South Florida, where she served as both a teacher and administrator in elementary and middle schools. Originally from London, England, she earned her Bachelor of Education from Kingston University before continuing her education in the United States, where she earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and a Doctorate in Instructional Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

Dr. Vaughan is passionate about helping every student reach their full potential by supporting teachers, inspiring students, and fostering a love of literacy. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family and is the proud mother of two daughters, Daniella and Yves, and a proud "Mimi" to two grandchildren, who inspire her love for education each day. She looks forward to partnering with students, families, and staff to build strong relationships and support every Wildcat's success.

Counselor - Apryl Ott

Apryl Ott is excited to serve the Greenleaf Elementary community as the campus counselor. She has proudly served the students and families of Greenleaf Elementary since 2009, beginning as a math intervention teacher, then teaching first grade for 8 years and kindergarten for 8 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Houston–Downtown and recently completed her Master of Education in School Counseling at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Mrs. Ott is passionate about helping children grow academically, socially, and emotionally. She is committed to ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and supported while building the confidence, resilience, and skills they need to thrive both in school and in life. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her husband, James, and their three children, Jacob, Allison, and Avaree.
