Principal

Sonya Simpson

Sonya Simpson, M.Ed

Sonya Simpson began her teaching career at Splendora ISD in August 2010. She was a third and fourth-grade teacher at Greenleaf Elementary from 2010 to 2019. Sonya mentored new teachers and sponsored the Wildcat Roar, the student newspaper club. She was privileged to serve as the reading specialist at Greenleaf Elementary in 2019. In 2020, Sonya was the Instructional Specialist at Piney Woods Elementary. After that, she served two years as the Assistant Principal of Piney Woods Elementary.

In 2010, Sonya graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. She received a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with an Instructional Coaching emphasis in 2019, and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership in 2020. 

Sonya and her husband, Brian, reside in Splendora ISD. She enjoys working with students, teachers, and parents, and believes every day is an opportunity to learn something new.

Kelly Smoot is honored to return home to Splendora ISD, where her educational journey first began. A proud graduate of Splendora High School, she launched her teaching career right here at Greenleaf Elementary. Now, with a decade of experience as a teacher, instructional coach, curriculum writer, and campus leader, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a heart for service back to the school and community she loves.

Smoot is passionate about student growth, teacher support, and fostering a positive and collaborative school culture. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time outdoors, kayaking, and traveling. She's also a proud dog mom to two Yorkies and an even prouder aunt—her nieces currently attend Piney Woods Elementary and Splendora Junior High!

 

Instructional Coaches

Veronica Hernandez

Veronica Hernandez graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering back in her home country of Venezuela in 2011, where she was the valedictorian of her class. In 2015, she decided to pursue a career in education in the United States, enrolling in an alternative certification program to become a Texas teacher. As a result of her efforts, she began working at Greenleaf Elementary in 2016 as a second-grade teacher. She has also taught fourth and fifth grade. She has served Splendora ISD in many capacities, such as team lead, mentor, and curriculum writer. Mrs. Hernandez feels honored to serve as an Instructional Specialist and is committed to guiding, coaching, and supporting a wonderful staff to meet their individual and common goals. She feels blessed to work for a district that prioritizes students and focuses on cultivating exceptional people.

Coker

Jennifer Coker

Jennifer Coker earned her Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Sam Houston State University in December 2013. She has taught kindergarten, second grade, and third grade. In August 2023, she began a new chapter as the STEM Instructional Coach and is excited to support innovation and growth at GLE. Mrs. Coker is married and a proud mom of three—Shelby and Jerry, who are discovering their own paths, and Elyjah, who is currently a second grader at GLE.
